10 years of BiXBiT: from a prototype to an ecosystem for mining and data centers

From the very beginning, the idea was bigger than mining. It rested on two things: useful computing and useful heat recovery. Mining hardware produces a lot of heat, and if you cool it with liquid, that heat can be put to work for space heating or hot water.

Decentralization, which we saw as the core idea of blockchain, was another pillar. We wanted mining to be accessible to everyone, not just the big players. That's why the solution was designed as a building kit from day one: from a single small cell all the way up to industrial sites in containers.

First prototypes: transformer oil and a workshop on the edge of town

The first units were assembled in an old garage. Inside small boxes ran ordinary computer hardware: motherboards, power supplies, graphics cards. Back then we used transformer oil as the coolant. It was harsh on components and smelled heavily when heated, and the prototypes themselves overheated because of mistakes in calculations and assembly.

Our main task became finding a dielectric fluid with the right properties. We tried deionized water, nearly tried sunflower oil, and the most unlikely chemical formulas you can imagine: single- and two-component, simple and complex. We brought in university professors and consulted specialists from different fields and countries.

There were surprises along the way. Once, during coolant testing, there was an unplanned explosion, right when we were sure it couldn't happen under any circumstances.

In April 2017, we found the right immersion fluid: hardware ran on it reliably, even overclocked. In July, a prototype of a modular, scalable unit was up and running.

Cell, rack, container

The next task was to turn the experiment into a product: mass-produced, stable and scalable. That's how the BiXBiT cell came about, the base module the whole system is built from. First came lines for GPUs, then for ASICs: the Antminer S9 was at the peak of its popularity, and infrastructure for expensive devices paid off quickly. In April 2018, we opened an assembly workshop and started our own production.

The turning point was our first big trade show in Berlin in 2018. The team felt we weren't ready yet, but we decided to go and show whatever we could finish in time. There were plenty of sleepless nights, but we came home with a clear sense that the market needed this technology and that it had huge potential.

Berlin gave us our biggest push forward. What followed was a software development team, container solutions, an office in Poland and a company in the US.

Two decisions from those years shaped our approach to hardware. The first was a vertical design: cells are combined into a rack, so the farm grows up rather than out. The second was a containerized design.

Meanwhile, the market was changing. ASIC manufacturers began releasing hardware for three types of cooling: air, hydro and immersion. We worked with Whatsminer at the time when the factory was just preparing its immersion models.

We brought some ideas to life before the market was ready for them. We started developing our own water blocks long before they became popular, with a professor helping us with fluid dynamics and internal design. Today, hydro cooling is one of the industry standards. The BiXBiT lineup includes both immersion and hydro systems, and our racks still fit modern immersion ASICs.

From overclocking to farm management: how our software came about

In November 2018, we took on our own ASIC firmware and a remote monitoring system. The path wasn't straight: there were experiments with diskless rig booting from the cloud and partner projects before our firmware for Whatsminer appeared, followed by firmware for Antminer. BiXBiT AMS was released in September 2022.

At first, people expected one thing from firmware: overclocking. Miners believed in Bitcoin's growth and tried to mine as many coins as possible.

Other needs came later. Today, our firmware can:

  • generate dozens of operating modes: more than 20 for Whatsminer and more than 10 for Antminer;
  • tune each chip automatically and keep hashrate and power consumption in balance;
  • switch profiles based on chip and ambient temperature, and stop and resume mining when needed;
  • disable faulty hash boards and chips so the ASIC keeps mining on the working ones;
  • reach working hashrate quickly after a reboot, without another long tuning cycle;
  • protect the farm from malware that redirects hashrate to other people's wallets.

BiXBiT today

Over ten years, we've gone from hardware to software, and today we bring the two together. Our focus has shifted from a single device to the entire farm.

A farm is an industrial complex with cooling, power and hundreds of devices. That's why we've grown our individual products into the BiXBiT ecosystem, which covers every level of the farm:

  • Device: firmware for Whatsminer and Antminer, and a control board for Antminer with firmware preinstalled.
  • Management: BiXBiT AMS brings ASICs, Smart PDUs and cooling together in one interface.
  • Cooling: immersion and hydro systems for ASICs, and immersion cooling for servers.
  • Power: Smart PDUs with controllable channels, soft start and short-circuit protection.
  • Infrastructure: racks, containers and mobile modular data centers that are assembled at the factory and arrive almost ready to launch.

Immersion cooling is still sometimes seen as complicated and unreliable. In practice, in our projects the hardware runs reliably both in frosts down to -40 °C and in tropical heat with high humidity, with 99.9% uptime everywhere.

Our time is just beginning

We started as a small team in a garage and often took on things others considered difficult or impossible. Today, BiXBiT covers every level of the farm, from the firmware of a single ASIC to a containerized data center, and the hexagon from that very first demo unit is still with us.

The ideas we started with are finally becoming what the world needs, and we're meeting this moment with ten years of experience. It matters to us to stay flexible and switch to new things in time, without losing faith in ideas that are bigger than just business.

Thank you to our clients, partners and team: we've come this far together! To celebrate our birthday, we've prepared some gifts.
